How to fix Meta Quest tracking lost

10 fixes, easiest first3 min readUpdated November 2026

Quick fix

Turn on more room lights (bright, even light, but no direct sunlight), wipe the cameras on the front of the headset with a dry microfiber cloth, then turn headset tracking back on from Quick controls > Settings > Movement tracking.

What it means

Meta Quest headsets find their position in the room by looking at it through small cameras on the front. When the cameras cannot see the room clearly, the headset loses 6DoF tracking: the picture may turn gray, freeze in place, drift, or follow your head instead of staying still. The cause is almost always the room's lighting or dirty cameras, and less often a stuck boundary or software glitch.

Common causes

  • The room is too dark, or the lighting changed since you set up
  • Direct sunlight, or possibly mirrors, glass or small lights such as LED strips confusing the cameras
  • Smudged or blocked tracking cameras, or a cover or sticker over them
  • Headset tracking was switched to 3DoF after a tracking loss
  • Old or corrupted boundary and room data
  • A software glitch that a restart or update clears

How to fix it

Work down the list. Each fix is safe to try before moving on to the next.

01Make the room brighter and more evenEasy

  1. Take the headset off and look at the room: if it is darker than when you set up, turn on more lamps or move to a brighter room.
  2. Aim for the kind of light you would have in a living room with guests over, spread evenly rather than one bright spot.
  3. Close curtains or blinds if strong sunlight falls on the play area.
  4. Never leave the headset where sunlight can reach the lenses, even indoors. Meta warns that less than a minute of direct sunlight can permanently damage the lenses and display.

Why it helps: The tracking cameras need steady, even light to see the room; low light is the most common reason tracking drops.

02Try removing mirrors, glass and small lights from viewEasy

  1. Try covering large mirrors, glass doors and shiny surfaces such as polished marble, or play facing away from them.
  2. Try switching off LED strips, fairy lights or Christmas lights near the play area.
  3. Test tracking again; if nothing changes, you can put things back.

Why it helps: Meta lists reflections and small lights as problems for controller tracking, which uses the same cameras, so they are worth ruling out.

03Clean the tracking cameras and remove coversEasy

  1. Turn the headset off.
  2. Gently wipe the small camera lenses on the front of the headset with a dry microfiber cloth.
  3. Do not use alcohol, chemical cleaners or sprays, and do not get the headset wet.
  4. Take off any third-party face cover, skin or sticker that sits over or near the cameras.
  5. Turn the headset back on and test tracking.

Why it helps: Fingerprints, dust or a cover over a camera can block part of the headset's view of the room.

04Turn headset tracking back onEasy

  1. Press the Meta button (or Oculus button on older controllers) on the right controller to open the Navigator.
  2. Select Quick controls, then Settings.
  3. Select Movement tracking.
  4. Turn on the toggle next to Headset tracking.
  5. Quick test: walk toward an object. If it gets closer, you have full 6DoF tracking; if you can only look around, tracking is still off.

Why it helps: After tracking is lost, the headset can fall back to 3DoF (look-around only) mode until you switch full tracking back on.

05Reset your view if the picture is off-center or driftingEasy

  1. Point the right controller straight ahead and press and hold the Meta button until the view resets.
  2. Or open Quick controls from the Navigator and select Reset view.
  3. Hold your head in a comfortable, natural position while it resets.

Why it helps: Recentering lines the virtual world up with where you are actually facing.

06Restart the headsetEasy

  1. With the headset on, press and hold the power button until the Power off screen appears.
  2. Select Restart and wait for the headset to start again.
  3. If the headset does not respond, press and hold the power button for at least 30 seconds, wait 30 seconds, then press the power button to turn it on.

Why it helps: A restart clears temporary glitches in the tracking software.

07Update the headset softwareEasy

  1. Charge the headset and make sure it is connected to Wi-Fi.
  2. Open the Navigator, then select Quick controls > Settings.
  3. Select General > Software update.
  4. If an update is available, download it and let the headset restart.

Why it helps: Updates include fixes for tracking problems found in earlier versions.

08Clear your boundary historyMedium

  1. Open the Navigator, then select Quick controls > Settings.
  2. Select Environment setup, then Boundary.
  3. Select Clear Boundary History.
  4. Draw a new boundary when asked, standing near the middle of the play area and looking all around the room as you draw.
  5. Note: this removes saved boundaries, and if the headset has more than one profile it may clear them for other profiles too.

Why it helps: Old or damaged boundary data can stop the headset recognizing the room and trigger tracking problems; Boundary was formerly called Guardian.

09Clear saved spaces and physical space historyMedium

  1. Open the Navigator, select Library, then Settings. Select Environment setup > Space setup, then select Clear next to Manage your spaces.
  2. Go back to Settings and select Privacy and safety > Device Permissions.
  3. Select Clear next to Clear physical space history.
  4. Restart the headset and set up your boundary again.

Why it helps: Clearing stored room scans makes the headset map the room fresh instead of relying on data from a room that has changed.

10Factory reset the headset (last resort)AdvancedBack up first

  1. Warning: a factory reset erases everything on the headset, including your account, downloaded games and any saves not backed up. Purchases stay on your Meta account and can be downloaded again.
  2. Turn on cloud backup first if you can, and charge the headset to at least 50%.
  3. Turn the headset off, then hold the power and volume down (-) buttons together until the boot screen appears.
  4. Use the volume buttons to highlight Factory reset and press the power button.
  5. Highlight Yes and press the power button, then set the headset up again.

Why it helps: If tracking still fails in good light with clean cameras, a reset rules out a deeper software problem before you contact support.

Check it's fixed

  • You can walk toward a wall or object in VR and it gets closer, which means 6DoF tracking is on.
  • The view stays still in the room when you turn your head instead of drifting or following you.
  • The headset remembers your boundary when you put it back on in the same room and lighting.

When to get help

If tracking still drops in a bright, evenly lit room with clean cameras after a restart and update, contact Meta Store Support, since a tracking camera may be faulty. Stop playing and stay still whenever tracking is lost, and only use 3DoF mode seated or standing in place.

Questions

Why does my Quest say tracking lost at night but not during the day?

The cameras need enough light to see the room. At night, turn on more lamps so the light is bright and even across the play area.

Can I keep playing when tracking is lost?

You can continue in 3DoF mode, which only tracks where you look, not where you move. Only do this seated or standing in one place, because the boundary will not protect you.

Will clearing boundary history delete my games?

No. It only removes saved boundaries, so you will need to draw your play area again. Games and saves are not affected.

Is it safe to clean the tracking cameras with a lens spray?

Meta says to use a dry microfiber cloth and avoid alcohol and chemical cleaners. A slightly damp corner of the cloth can lift stubborn dirt, but keep moisture off the headset.
