UPDATED NOVEMBER 20262 MIN READ7 FIXES

QUICK FIX

Delete the cookies for that site and reload. If it still loops on every browser and device, the site has a redirect loop that the owner must fix.

What it means

The website keeps sending your browser from one address to another in a loop, so the page never loads. Bad cookies can cause it on your side, but it is most often a site setup mistake, such as conflicting HTTP and HTTPS redirects.

Common causes

  • Old or broken cookies for the site
  • An extension that rewrites or redirects addresses
  • Conflicting HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects on the server
  • Cloudflare set to Flexible SSL while the server also forces HTTPS
  • Wrong site address settings in WordPress or another CMS
  • Conflicting redirect rules or plugins

How to fix it

Work down the list. Each fix is safe to try before moving on to the next.

FIX 01Delete cookies for that siteEASY

  1. Open the site's address in Chrome.
  2. Click the icon to the left of the address, then Site settings.
  3. Select Delete data and confirm.
  4. Reload the page.

Why it helps: Bad cookies are the main cause Chrome points to.

FIX 02Clear all cookies and cacheEASY

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Delete (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + Delete (Mac).
  2. Choose All time, tick Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files.
  3. Delete and reload. You may need to sign in to sites again.

Why it helps: Also removes cached redirects the browser remembered.

FIX 03Try Incognito and turn off extensionsEASY

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + N (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + N (Mac) and open the site.
  2. If it works, turn off extensions at chrome://extensions one at a time.

Why it helps: Extensions that force HTTPS or rewrite links can create loops.

FIX 04Check your date and timeEASY

  1. Windows 11: Settings > Time & language > Date & time, turn on Set time automatically.
  2. Mac: Apple menu > System Settings > General > Date & Time, turn on Set time and date automatically.

Why it helps: A wrong clock can make sign-in cookies expire instantly, causing login loops.

FIX 05Fix Cloudflare SSL redirect loopsMEDIUMSITE OWNERS

  1. In Cloudflare, open SSL/TLS > Overview and check the encryption mode.
  2. If it is Flexible and your server redirects HTTP to HTTPS, install a certificate on the server and switch to Full (strict), or remove the server redirect.
  3. If Always Use HTTPS is on, make sure the server does not redirect HTTPS back to HTTP.
  4. Review redirect rules and Page Rules for rules that send traffic back and forth.

Why it helps: Mismatched HTTPS settings between Cloudflare and the server are a leading cause of redirect loops.

FIX 06Check WordPress address settingsMEDIUMSITE OWNERS

  1. In WordPress, go to Settings > General.
  2. Make sure WordPress Address (URL) and Site Address (URL) match exactly, including https and www.
  3. Temporarily deactivate redirect, SSL and caching plugins to find conflicts, then clear any server or plugin cache.

Why it helps: Mismatched URLs and overlapping redirect plugins commonly loop.

FIX 07Review server redirect rulesADVANCEDSITE OWNERS

  1. Check .htaccess, Nginx config or your host's redirect settings for HTTP/HTTPS and www/non-www rules.
  2. Keep a single rule for each direction and make sure they do not undo each other.
  3. Test with curl -sIL https://example.com to list each redirect and its Location header, so you can see where the loop starts.

Why it helps: Two rules pointing at each other create an endless loop.

Check it's fixed

  • The page loads in a normal window.
  • You can sign in and stay signed in.
  • The site loads in another browser or device.

When to get help

If the loop happens on every device, contact the site owner or host. Site owners unsure where redirects come from should ask their host to check server rules.

Questions

Will deleting cookies log me out?

Deleting cookies for one site only signs you out of that site. Clearing all cookies signs you out of most sites.

Why does it happen after installing an SSL certificate?

Usually the new HTTPS redirect conflicts with an existing rule, a plugin or Cloudflare's Flexible mode.

Is a redirect loop dangerous?

No. It just stops the page from loading.
