How to fix an Apple TV that is not working

10 fixes, easiest first4 min readUpdated November 2026

Quick fix

Restart the Apple TV by going to Settings > System > Restart, or unplug it from power, wait a few seconds and plug it back in. If the remote does not respond, charge it for 30 minutes and pair it again by holding Back (or Menu) and Volume Up for five seconds.

What it means

When an Apple TV stops working, the box may be frozen, the remote may have lost its connection or run out of charge, the TV may be on the wrong input, or the internet connection may be too slow to stream. If the problem is only inside the Apple TV app (on any device), the cause is often a service outage, a sign-in problem or a slow connection.

Common causes

  • The Apple TV is frozen and needs a restart
  • The remote is out of charge or no longer paired
  • The TV is on the wrong HDMI input, or the HDMI cable is loose or faulty
  • Weak Wi-Fi or a slow internet connection
  • An Apple service outage or a sign-in problem in the Apple TV app
  • Out-of-date tvOS software
  • A power problem with the cord or outlet

How to fix it

Work down the list. Each fix is safe to try before moving on to the next.

01Check whether Apple's services are downEasy

  1. On a phone or computer, open Apple's official System Status page and look for problems with Apple TV or Apple TV+.
  2. If you watch through another company's app or channel, check that company's official help page or social account.
  3. If there is an outage, wait and try again later.

Why it helps: If Apple's service is down, nothing on your side will fix it, so this saves time.

02Restart the Apple TVEasy

  1. If the menus still work, open Settings > System and select Restart.
  2. If the screen is frozen, press and hold the TV button and the Back button (Menu on older remotes) together until the light on the Apple TV box blinks quickly.
  3. If neither works, unplug the Apple TV power cord, wait about 5 seconds and plug it back in.

Why it helps: A restart clears a frozen app or a stuck system and fixes many problems on its own.

03If the remote doesn't respond, charge and pair it againEasy

  1. Charge the remote for 30 minutes with its cable and a USB wall charger.
  2. Hold the remote about 3 inches from the Apple TV box and point it at the box.
  3. Press and hold Back (Menu on older remotes) and Volume Up together for 5 seconds. If asked, set the remote on top of the Apple TV to finish.
  4. If it still won't pair, unplug the Apple TV, wait 6 seconds, plug it back in and try again.
  5. To restart the remote itself, hold the TV (Control Center) button and Volume Down together for about 5 seconds, until the light on the Apple TV turns off and on. Release, wait 5 to 10 seconds, then press any button.
  6. If it pairs but works badly, stay within about 20 feet of the Apple TV and move anything blocking the path. On tvOS 18 or later, Settings > Remotes and Devices > Remote shows the signal strength.

Why it helps: A remote with a flat battery or a lost connection is one of the most common reasons an Apple TV seems dead.

04If there's no picture, check the input and HDMI cableEasy

  1. Use the TV's own remote to choose the HDMI input the Apple TV is plugged into.
  2. Unplug both ends of the HDMI cable and push them back in firmly.
  3. Try a different HDMI port on the TV, starting with HDMI 1, and then a different HDMI cable.
  4. If the Apple TV goes through a sound system or HDMI switch, plug it straight into the TV to test.
  5. If the screen is blank because of the picture setting, hold Back (Menu on older remotes) and Volume Down together for 5 seconds. The Apple TV tries a new resolution every 20 seconds; select OK when the picture looks right.

Why it helps: Most blank-screen problems come from the wrong input, a loose or faulty cable, or a resolution the TV can't show.

05If the screen flickers or goes blank when a video starts, check Match ContentEasy

  1. Open Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content.
  2. Note whether Match Dynamic Range or Match Frame Rate is turned on.
  3. Turn them off one at a time and play the video again to see if the blank screen stops.

Why it helps: These settings make the TV switch modes when a video starts or stops, which can cause a short blank or flickering screen.

06If the Apple TV won't turn on, check the powerEasy

  1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the Apple TV, wait 30 seconds and plug it back in.
  2. Plug the cord into a different wall outlet or power strip.
  3. If you can, try a different Apple TV power cord.

Why it helps: A loose cord, a bad outlet or a faulty cable can stop the Apple TV from powering on.

07Check the Wi-Fi and internet connectionEasy

  1. Open Settings > Network and check that the Apple TV is connected to your home network. Select Wi-Fi to pick the network again if needed.
  2. Try streaming on another device on the same network. If it also fails, restart your modem and router or contact your internet provider.
  3. Ask others in the home to pause large downloads or video calls while you watch.
  4. Apple says HD streaming needs a connection of at least 8 Mbps.
  5. If your model has an Ethernet port, a cable from the router to the Apple TV gives a steadier connection.

Why it helps: Buffering, blurry video and apps that won't load are usually caused by a slow or unstable connection.

08If only the Apple TV app won't play, check sign-in and limitsEasy

  1. Make sure you are signed in to the right Apple Account. If you can't sign in, reset your password through Apple's official account page.
  2. Turn the smart TV, streaming stick or game console off and on again, or restart your phone, tablet or computer.
  3. Update the app: on Apple devices update the device software; on Windows and Android update the app from the Microsoft Store or Google Play Store.
  4. If several people share the subscription, make sure you are not over the number of devices allowed to stream at once.
  5. For a title you bought that still won't play, report it through Apple's official Report a Problem page.

Why it helps: Problems inside the app are usually caused by sign-in issues, an old app version or too many people streaming at once.

09Update the Apple TV softwareEasy

  1. Open Settings > System > Software Updates.
  2. Select Update Software, then Download and Install if an update is listed.
  3. Leave the Apple TV plugged in until it restarts.
  4. Turn on Automatically Update so future fixes install on their own.

Why it helps: tvOS updates fix bugs that can cause freezing, app crashes and connection problems.

10Reset the Apple TV to factory settingsAdvancedBack up first

  1. Warning: a reset erases everything on the Apple TV, including your accounts, settings and downloaded apps. You will need to set it up again.
  2. Open Settings > System > Reset.
  3. Choose Reset to erase it, or Reset and Update to erase it and install the latest tvOS.
  4. Leave it plugged in; the reset can take some time.
  5. Set it up again when it finishes. An iPhone or iPad can speed up setup.

Why it helps: A reset clears problems the other fixes could not reach, by returning the Apple TV to how it left the factory.

Check it's fixed

  • The Apple TV home screen appears and responds to the remote.
  • A show plays in the Apple TV app or another app without stopping to buffer.
  • The remote shows as connected and works from across the room.

When to get help

If the Apple TV still won't turn on, shows a warning symbol, or keeps freezing after a reset, contact Apple Support to arrange service. If every device in the home struggles to stream, contact your internet provider.

Questions

How do I restart a frozen Apple TV?

Hold the TV button and Back (or Menu) on the remote until the light on the box blinks quickly. If the remote doesn't work, unplug the Apple TV, wait a few seconds and plug it back in.

Why won't my Apple TV remote work?

It may be out of charge or no longer paired. Charge it for 30 minutes, then hold Back (or Menu) and Volume Up for five seconds close to the box to pair it again.

What does resetting an Apple TV erase?

A reset erases all the data on the box, including your accounts and settings, so you have to set it up again. Try a restart, the remote steps and a software update first.

Why does the Apple TV app keep buffering?

Usually the connection is too slow or busy. Apple says HD streaming needs at least 8 Mbps, so pause other heavy internet use or move closer to the router.
